Pediatric Hernia

A pediatric hernia is a condition that occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscles or surrounding tissue wall. While the idea of a hernia might sound alarming, they are quite common in children and often easily treatable.

Types of Pediatric Hernias

  1. Inguinal Hernia: This is the most common type in children, especially boys. It happens when a part of the intestine bulges through a weak spot in the lower abdominal wall, often appearing as a lump in the groin or scrotum.
  2. Umbilical Hernia: This type occurs near the belly button (navel). You might notice a bulge at or around your child’s belly button, especially when they cry, cough, or strain. These hernias are more common in infants and usually close on their own by the time the child is 3 to 4 years old.
  3. Epigastric Hernia: Less common than the other types, epigastric hernias occur between the navel and the lower part of the ribcage. They can cause a small bump and sometimes discomfort.

Causes of Pediatric Hernias

Hernias in children are often congenital, meaning they are present at birth. They occur because of an incomplete closure of certain structures during fetal development. For instance, in boys, an inguinal hernia may develop if the pathway through which the testicles descend into the scrotum doesn’t close properly.

After Surgery
